Brilliant 3D Billboard Ad Promotes New Black Sabbath Album

Black Sabbath 13 Street Ad

The success of the new Black Sabbath album “13” is nothing less of spectacular, the album debuted on top of both the UK and US album charts. It’s the first full-length album Black Sabbath to feature original members Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler since 1978’s Never Say Die. Unfortunately, drummer Bill Ward parted ways with the band before the recording of the album, spoiling what would have been a full reunion.

A brilliantly produced billboard ad in Denmark promotes the new album by revealing one of the band’s logos from the early 70s through a large hole ripped through dozens of other large posters. It seems to suggest travelling back through time, uncovering layers of forgotten acts to re-discover the band.

The ads were created by McCann, Copenhagen.

New FedEx Ad Features Golf Loving Metal Heads

FedEx Metal Band

FedEx is promoting their shipping services with a series of golf-themed ads. The funniest one features a metal band that looks like a mashup real-life rockers Slipknot and Cradle of Filth.

In the ad the band’s manager storms into their hotel room and yells, “How am I supposed to sell you guys as the most dangerous band in the world, when you’re seen schlepping golf clubs through the airport?” A masked member of the band responds, “but we love golf.” The solution? Ship your golf clubs with FedEx.

The ad was created by BBDO New York and directed by Jim Jenkins of OPositive. Among Jenkins previous work is the hilarious Snickers ad, ‘Party’ starring Joe Pesci.

Mastodon Invites Fans to Play Guitar or Drums on New Track

Mastodon The HunterAtlanta heavy metal band Mastodon knocked it out of the park with their 2009 album Crack the Skye, earning legions of new fans and rave reviews of their sophisticated sound. In September Mastodon is set to release their new album entitled ‘The Hunter’, and in a competition hosted on Soundcloud they’re inviting fans to step forward and play lead guitar or drums on the track Curl of the Burl.

Fans download stems without the lead guitar or drums (a 441 MB ZIP file), record their version, then upload it to Soundcloud for everyone to hear and vote on. The winner will receive a new MacBook Air notebook, $50 to spend in Mastodon online store, a message from the band and a 1-year pro Soundcloud account. The band will select the winner based on originality and skill. The prize listing notes that one of the ‘losers’ will even receive an empty bag of chips (no idea whether it’ll be signed by the band or not). The competition closes on September 9.

Augmented Reality Cover Art
The fun doesn’t stop there, when the new album’s cover art is viewed through a webcam it creates an augmented reality experience where the viewer appears to be wearing a 3D version of the trippy animal head sculpture.
