‘How I Met Your Mother’ Donut Joke Inspires Tim Horton’s to Bake Up ‘The Priestley’

Tim Horton's 'The Priestley'

This week’s episode of the CBS sitcom ‘How I Met Your Mother‘ took an unexpectedly Canadian turn, as Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) travelled to Vancouver to look into his fiancé Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) admission that she once was a stalker. After flying to Vancouver, Barney interrogates Robin’s exes at a local Tim Horton’s, bribing them with donuts for more information.

One of the exes lets him know that the Robin’s story was featured on an episode of MuchMusic’s Underneath the Tunes. Once back in New York, Barney gathers the gang to watch the episode. It turns out Robin was once a Canadian pop star who revealed her darker side ‘Robin Daggers’ during a Gray Cup half-time show in Hamilton.

In the episode, Canadians Geddy Lee, Steven Page, Luc Robitaille, Paul Shaeffer, k.d. lang and Jason Priestley could recall which Tim Horton’s they were sitting in, and what donut they were eating when the shocking event took place.

While most of the Canadians’ donut choices were more traditional; blueberry fritter, maple crunch, sour dough plain. But it was Priestley’s admission of stuffing a TimBit into a Strawberry Vanilla that captured the imagination of people at Tim Horton’s headquarters. On Tuesday night, a post on Tim Horton’s Twitter account announced, “.@Jason_Priestley, we loved the idea of ‘The Priestley’ so much, we made a batch. A Timbit IN a donut? Genius.“, including a photo of the creation.

Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan Pitch Ideas for Samsung Mobile Super Bowl Ad Teaser

Samsung Mobile USA Super Bowl 2013 El Plato Supremo

If you scratch your head when you see Sunday’s Super Bowl referenced as the Big Game in some ads, you may have dandruff or not realize the tight restriction on trademarked terms. Fact is, the Super Bowl is a trademarked term, and while it can be mentioned in news and conversation about the game, its use for commercial purposes is tightly restricted to authorized advertisers.

In a new Samsung Mobile teaser, actors Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd are pitching ideas for Samsung’s ‘Big Game’ ad to a marketing guy, played by Breaking Bad’s Bob Odenkirk. They find out that that while they can say ‘super’ they can’t say ‘bowl’ with it. They can say San Francisco and Baltimore, but they can’t say 49ers or Ravens, which are trademarks of their individual teams.

The two settle on creating an ad for ‘The Big Plate featuring the San Francisco 50 minus oners and the Baltimore Blackbirds’.

The ‘El Plato Supremeo’ teaser was created 72 and Sunny, and directed by Jon Favreau.

BC Dairy Association Launches Song Contest Judged By Cows

BC Dairy Association - Music Makes More Milk

Tom Hoogendoorn, his brother and families own Valedoorn Farms in Agassiz (just north-west of Chilliwack), British Columbia. Together they raise and care for 300 dairy cows, including 5; Daffodil, Jasmine, Rianne, Hester and Skylar; who will serve as the final judges in the BC Dairy Association’s Music Makes More Milk song competition.

Studies have shown that if cows like the music (classical in particular) being played in the barn, it may result in the production of more milk. Your mission is to create a song, using the online music composition application on the contest website, that the cows on Valdedoorn Farms will enjoy.

The top 15 songs will be voted on by the public until November 16, with the most popular tunes being played to the cows. A special ‘cow-cam’ will be available to watch the reactions of the bovine jury. In the final round, one finalist’s song will be played each day before milking. The amount of milk produced each day will be measured, with the song that resulted in the most milk being declared the overall winner.

The Music Makes More Milk competition was created by the Vancouver office of DDB Canada.

The Script Launch Geo-Social Concert Ticket Giveaway

Get Me to the Script

Fans of Irish rock band The Script can scoop up tickets to this week’s sold-out shows in London and Manchester by posting tweets containing #GetMeToTheScript.

Each tweet sent with the hashtag helps to reveal the location of the free tickets by magnifying a map on The Script’s Facebook page. The first fan to arrive at the location wins the tickets.

The giveaway is a great example of combining Twitter and Facebook to effectively promote and manage a small-scale social campaign; Twitter for it’s ability to amplify a message and a Facebook page app for a simple hosting solution.

‘Get Me to The Script’ was put together by Essence London.

Billboard Brazil Launches the On-Hold Jam Session

Billboard Brazil - On Hold Jam

So, it turns out that I am not the only person to try banging out the chords to Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke on the Water’ on the keypad of a telephone, much to the chagrin sometimes of the other people on the conference call. The ‘On Hold Jam Session’ campaign for Billboard Magazine in Brazil encourages just that kind of behaviour.

Media-buyers and agencies received a special direct mail piece complete with a cheat sheet of how they too, could play along with the ‘on-hold’ at the Billboard offices. The four songs included the aforementioned ‘Smoke on the Water‘, but Van Halen’s Jump, Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger and , Funkytown, a song that actually sounds like it may have been recorded on a keypad.

This initiative is a bit more tame, yet still as… ahem, hands on as the ‘Guitar-Pee‘, an interactive urinal complete with sensors that react to an… ahem, stream.

Both campaigns were created by AlmapBBDO, São Paulo.

Volkswagen Turns Ad Campaign Into Magazine Recycling Effort

Volkswagen BlueMotion Recycling Campaign

When Ogilvy Cape Town was tasked with creating an ad campaign to introduce South Africans to Volkwagen’s BlueMotion, they took a cue from the eco-conscious mindset behind the technologies.

With over 77% magazines being thrown away, how could creating another magazine ad help to save paper instead of wasting it? The agency’s solution was to create a magazine insert that could double as a mailing label. They took the budget that would normally spent on photography or illustration and purchased return postage. Once the reader has finished reading the magazine, they apply the mailing label and drop the magazine into the nearest post office box.

The response rate so far has been 9%, and based on that success the agency is looking at rolling the program out to other cities in South Africa.

Huggies Brings Argentine Newborns Together for a Very Special Friends Day

Huggies: My First Friend

Every year on July 20, Argentinians celebrate El Día del Amigo, Friends Day. Teacher, musician (and dentist) Enrique Febbraro came up with the idea to celebrate Friend’s Day in Argentina after seeing the world come together in 1969 to observe man’s first steps on the moon. Friends day is also celebrated in Brazil and Uruguay on July 20 and July 30 in Paraguay.

Huggies and Ogilvy & Mather Argentina came together to create a special event for Friends Day, designing a special crib so that two newborns could spend the special day together. The event took with the support of the babies’ parents, as well as the obstetricians and nurses of the Bazterrica Clinic in Buenos Aires.
