Filmmaker Spends ‘Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ Promotional Budget on Philippines Relief

Casey Leistat uses "Life of Walter Mitty" Promo Budget for Philippines relief

Casey Neistat is an American filmmaker who gained some notoriety in 2012 when he and his editor Max Joseph went “off-script” while producing an ad for Nike Fuel Band. Instead they travelled around the world for 11 days shooting footage based on the theme of “Make it Count”. The resulting video instantly became a viral hit with over 10 million views.

This time with a budget of $25,000, Casey was asked to produce a film promoting the release of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by 20th Century Fox and Ogilvy & Mather, Buenos Aires. Casey responded with a concept where he would travel to the Philippines and spend all the money helping the victims of the recent devastating typhoon. The agency and studio agreed and soon Casey was off to Manila with his friend Oscar.

They began their adventure with a tweet; “anyone know anyone in Manila who knows how to make shit happen?” An email and phone call followed and soon they were headed south to the town of Cebu where they purchased relief supplies and rented two passenger buses to transport them.

Web Series ‘Build’ Features Cars Built From Parts Purchased on eBay Motors

eBay Motors - Built

What better way to demonstrate the depth of product on eBay Motors than to create a car-build show in which teams buy and build the cars from parts found on the site.

The 10 part web series features teams from four respected Los Angeles area garages; Mackey’s Hot Rods, Off Road Evolution, GSR Autosport and Duran’s Quality Painting, with support from Hot Rod, Four Wheeler, European Car and Lowrider magazines.

During each episode, the parts purchased for the build are highlighted in a sidebar with a link to the product on the eBay Motors site. With the series completed, all 4 of the vehicles are up for auction with all proceeds going to four charities; Semper F1 Fund, The California Trail Users Coalition, SEMA Cares and The SEMA Memorial Scholarships.

With 6 days rmaining in the auction, the 1970 Jeep Grand Cherokee built by Off Road Evolution leads the bids, slightly ahead of the 1966 Chevy El Camino Lowrider built by Duran’s Quality Painting.

The series was created by San Francisco’s Venables Bell & Partners.

Yasiin Bey & Niel Shoe Meulman Interpret Muhammad Ali’s ‘The Greatest’

Louis Vuitton - The Greatest

When Muhammad Ali appeared in London during the Opening Ceremonies for the 2012 Olympics, it marked 52 years since Ali had won the gold medal at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. There’s never been anyone who could trash talk like Ali, especially since he had such little trouble backing it up.

Ali is, and will always be ‘The Greatest’.

The words of Muhammad Ali’s ‘The Greatest’ are central to the new campaign from Louis Vuitton Journeys. Yasiin Bey (better known as rapper and actor Mos Def) was brought together with Dutch Calligraffiti artist (a combination of calligraphy and graffiti) Niel Shoe Meulman. As Yasiin recites Ali’s words, Meulman paints out ‘Word’ with a broom on the boxing ring canvas.

Star with Topher Grace in New Toshiba/Intel Social Film ‘The Beauty Inside’

Toshiba/Intel The Beauty Inside - Social FIlm Experience

Last July Intel and Toshiba teamed up to sponsor ‘The Inside Experience‘ an interactive social film directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) and starring Emmy Rossum (of HBO’s Shameless). Rossum played Christina, a young woman who wakes up in a strange sealed-off room, where she discovers an Intel-powered Toshiba laptop with a dicey connection to an untraceable web connection. Christina uses social media to ask for help to escape and discover the identity of her captors by posting content to her Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts. The audience could determine certain aspects within the story, influence its direction, as well as audition to star in the series themselves.

This summer the two tech firms are back to sponsor a new social film entitled ‘The Beauty Inside’, the story of Alex, a 20 something man living in Los Angeles who has woken up every day in his life with a new physical appearance (you may be seeing where this is going already). Fans can audition for the role of Alex on the ‘The Beauty Inside’ Facebook page. Since Alex’s appearance changes everyday, multiple people (both male and female) will be chosen to play the role.

The film is being directed by Sundance-Award winning director Drake Doremus and will star Topher Grace (That 70s Show), and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs the World). Episode 1 on Thursday August 16 at 3:00pm PST on Facebook.

The project was developed by LA agency Pereira & O’Dell and and production company B-Reel.
